Skills4Health is a course which has been developed by the Community Development and Health Network (with funding from the Educational Guidance Service for Adults, EGSA) to enable people to improve their essential skills through learning about individual and community health issues.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Essential Skills for Health
Funder – EGSA (UNDER Peace 11 Measure 1.3)

EGSA - the Educational Guidance Service for Adults - is a local, independent, not-for-profit, frontline service that aims to connect adults with learning.

EGSA has a network of local offices based across Northern Ireland through which it provides services to adult learners, learning advisers, providers, employers and anyone interested in improving access to learning for adults

Aim
In conjunction with CDHN, the project aimed to develop and deliver a prevocational Community Development and Health Issues course as a context for helping participants improve their essential skills.

Main Objectives

  • Produce an Essential Skills for Health Resource Pack
  • Establish an editorial group to oversee the adaptation of Community Development Approaches to Health Issues in Northern Ireland for use as an essential skills resource.
  • To use the editorial group as the core for the development of essential skills area based partnerships.
  • To pilot and evaluate 8 taster courses in and to marginalised communities by June 06.

Outputs

  • At least 4 pilots delivered by June 05, with the remainder by June 06, spread across the 4 Health and Social Services Board areas.
  • Resource pack produced and 100 copies printed.
  • Editorial group meet regularly and act as a catalyst for area based partnerships.
  • A case study in the development of area based partnerships will be published.

Projected Outcomes
80 Participants complete the pilot courses.

60 progress onto essential skills training within the FE Sector, or into employment.

The pilot area based partnership will yield learning about how to develop and implement cross sectoral approaches to essential skills provision including referral routes.
