A Healthy Debate

CDHN’s quarterly magazine attempts to chart recent developments in the community development and health field.

We encourage members to participate in crafting 'A Healthy Debate' by identifying themes for each issue, through submitting articles on their perspectives on current topics in the health arena, highlighting recent success stories for their organisations and the sharing of good practice.

For more information on how to become involved in shaping 'A Healthy Debate' contact Kathy at CDHN offices.

Tools of the Trade

The Community Development and Health Toolkit is aimed primarily at those coming from a range of backgrounds in the health and social services as well as from the community and voluntary sectors who use Community Development approaches for improving the health of their communities.

The Toolkit suggests ways of responding to common problems and aims to guide you towards sources of information that will help you focus your practice. The Toolkit adopts a broad definition of health, which recognises that people's health is determined by their social, economic and environmental experience, as well as by individual factors, and that Community Development methods are appropriate for addressing these social determinants of health.

Policy to Practice

Policy to Practice is a strategy developed by the Community Development and Health Network funded by European Social Fund to:

  • Assist Health and Social Services Trusts in integrating and embedding a community development approach as part of the core business of Health and Social Services in Northern Ireland.

  • Create a practice based training and organisational development and support programme for Health and Social Services.

  • Research the enabling and constraining factors to implementing a community development approach within the Trusts.

Tales from the Field

Tales from the Field of community development and health work', the research on which this report is based, included a community activity survey and a series of focus groups that were undertaken between April and August 1999. The overall aims were to describe the activities and the challenges of what has come to be called Community Development and Health work.

The main issues arising for practitioners in the current policy climate were explored as were their perceptions of what they need to help them perform their role.

The participants in the study all sought to achieve change through their work and valued the flexibility that the Community Development approach offered. The next step of the process was to develop a 'toolkit' for practitioners new to the community development and health field. This is called Tools of the Trade, it is now available.
